Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson, who was named after her paternal grandmother of the same name, was born in Oxfordshire, England. However, she moved to France and lived there for 5 years, before moving back to England. Her parents, who are both lawyers, are now divorced. She has a younger brother, Alex, who was born in 1993. Outside of acting, she enjoys hockey, tennis, and rounders. She is not related to actress Emily Watson. She is a British actress who portrays Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series.
Prior to being cast in the Harry Potter films, she had only done school plays. At school, she took the lead role in several plays, including Arthur: The Young Years and The Happy Prince. Along with plays, Emma participated in many other school productions, including the Daisy Pratt Poetry Competition, in which she won first place for her year at age seven.
As a result of her critically acclaimed performance in The Chamber of Secrets, on 14 January 2003, she won the award for "Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role - Female" in the Phoenix Film Critics Awards. Her performance in The Prisoner of Azkaban was also well-received, but had an additional effect – it propelled her to #8 on the Lycos Top 50, and she is the only "Potter Star" to have appeared on that list.
